The Grey Men

The Grey Men are figures from the old and wise book Momo, by Michael Ende.

They appeared to people as agents of the Timesaving Bank, encouraging you to open an account in a manner akin to signing away your soul.

"How does the system work?"

"Don't worry, we'll take care of that. Rest assured, we won't mislay a single second of the time you save. You'll find you haven't any left over."

Account holders were advised to put their parents in an old age home, to schedule their lovers, supervise the hours of their employees, gain the maximum relaxation from the minimum leisure time and stop daydreaming at any cost.

The Grey Men "had an uncanny knack of making themselves so inconspicuous that you either overlooked them or forgot ever seeing them".

Have you been visited by an agent of the Timesaving Bank?
